The Westcountry’s drinking spots are fighting the recession – with five new entries in this year’s Michelin Guide to Eating Out in Pubs.

The Coldstreamer in Gulval, Cornwall, and The Crown and Victoria Inn in Tintinhull, Somerset, are celebrating their places in the esteemed book.

The editor of the guide book, which features more than 500 pubs across Britain and Ireland, said traditional drinking spots were “suffering” but that those who are making efforts with food will “thrive”.

Chef Tom Penhaul, of the Coldstreamer, near Penzance, said: “A lot of the meals we serve have been sourced from within a ten-mile radius of the pub. We also have a system where locals bring in some of their produce and we barter with them, giving them drink or meals in return for the goods. It’s very handy.

“My job is made very easy by the good local produce we’ve got on offer.”

Mr Penhaul’s brother Harry, who manages the pub, said: “We’re very pleased to have made it into the guide. It is a particular achievement because it hasn’t even been a year yet since we took over.

The Coldstreamer’s menu features Terras Farm duck breast with a swede gratin, golden beetroot, chard and damsons.
