A painting documenting life at one of Cornwall’s most iconic scenes has found a permanent and fitting new home.
Stanhope Forbes’ 1921 work Abbey Slip, a view of Penzance, has been bought to sit alongside collections at Penlee House Gallery and Museum in the West Cornish fishing port. The move was thanks to large donations from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF), the Museums, Libraries and Arts council, and the Friends of Penlee House.
More than 250 private donors also chipped in to help secure the future of the piece, created by the doyen of the influential Newlyn school of painters. Alison Bevan, director of Penlee House, said: “We were overwhelmed by the strength of public feeling towards keeping this well-loved painting here.”
Carole Souter, chief executive of NHMF, added: “For 30 years the National Heritage Memorial Fund has been saving the nation’s most important treasures, and now this piece of quintessentially Cornish heritage will join an outstanding collection.”
Abbey Slip combines meticulous recording of the built-up environment with highly accomplished painting technique that brilliantly captures the effect of the play of light on water.
